Keynoter - Latin America - Taran Rampersad

From San Fernando, Trinidad and Trinidad, Taran Rampersad will honor us with compelling remarks.

Taran writes:

Throughout the Caribbean and Latin American region, just about every major language in the world is spoken. In Brazil, we have Portugese. Throughout Latin America, with 3 notable exceptions, Spanish. In Belize and Guyana, the language is English, in Suriname it is Dutch, and in French Guiana it is… French. Then the Caribbean, scattered through the waters to the East of the South American continent, covers the European languages… and yet, in all of these countries, there are dialect changes and even changes to language which create new languages which are gaining formal acceptance. Language is key, and is one of the reasons CARDICIS came into being.

Communications incorporates language, be it verbal or written. And technology incorporates communications. Society is largely built on communication. But at the base of all of this are these people - average people - who cross borders in their own fashions, and who create bridges over chasms.Trinidad and Tobago

Thus the outline of what I will be talking about is quite simple - how people within the region do and do not recognize this, react to this, and ideas for what can be done to make the region more conducive to communications, society and technology. There are challenges, as always, and the ideas to move past these challenges need to be thought of not just by people in air conditioned offices - but the average person within the region. As always, it is the regular person who is the solution.

For those who do not understand Spanish, what the comment above says is that while there are European languages, indigenous languages play an important role as well- those of the peoples here who existed before los conquistadores arrived. But there are also languages which fall outside of these categories - such as Hindi and it’s own creolizations, Chinese and so on.

    y… en Espanol - ¡Verdad! :-)
