I’ve been watching with keen interest some heavy-duty reconstruction at the Delt House, right next door to us here at Theta Chi. They just got a brand new loan of $250,000. It’s well secured by the property — a great big gorgeous corner lot, two blocks from the Oregon campus. The money is to be used for a new roof, new heating systems, new windows, exterior painting, other odds and ends, here and there. All sounds good. Right? It’s not. Here, in a small capsule, is why. There’s something terribly, terribly wrong with hundreds of failing Greek Chapters around the country. Some ascribe the problems, mainly, to an “entitlement generation” unwilling to shoulder House responsibilities as was done in yesteryear. Others assert it is either too much (or too little) oversight by the alumni; or too much (or too little) cash contributions from them. And some will say it is due to senior University executives who simply want to do away with Greeks altogether.
As always, there is some merit to each of these arguments.
Rarely voiced is how much of the failings are due to irresponsible lending practices by banks — especially those in the hands of the national Headquarters? It’s a great question and deserves a lot more attention than it is getting. Read the rest of this entry »

I post this article because I remain hopeful that it is still “in the cards” to (temporarily) house a small carpentry “shop” in the basement of the Theta Chi House this summer. The reasons for that undertaking are brilliantly expressed with this lovely, lovely piece. Enjoy!

On December 7, 2008, in concert with the University’s decision to disenfranchise the Alpha Sigma Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity, the Alumni Board ousted all active brothers and pledges from the House.
