Jobs and Training

Why do we address the issue of Jobs?

Next to recruiting outstanding young men, it's hard to argue with those who think that helping the undergraduates get good jobs comes next on the Alumni Priority List. In a Google-ized, globalized world, providing that help is now possible in ways unimaginable even a few years ago.

Often, we talk about "rushing nuggets"....a continuing search for the best men coming out of high school.

But how often do we think of ourselves as "nuggets" -- the kind of people that ambitious, job-seeking undergraduates would like to find? network with?

Along these lines, two ideas are starting to circulate

The first idea has to do with finding national corporations who would be in a position to hire motivated undergraduates in the summer....year in, and year out. For those headed into real estate, how about Caldwell Banker? For those looking at making a living in the investment business, how about Charles Schwab? What can we -- the Alumni -- do to open doors to explore intern programs that would be available year-in and year-out?

The second idea is to link juniors and seniors with Big Brothers who have the same cast of mind. Artists with graphic illustrators; green accountants with those well seasoned; journalists with those in public relations.

Both of these ideas require good data banks that are easily searchable. That's no problem. We have them now and are working hard to input into them accurate contact information. What's harder is to find ways to keep them accurate year-in and year-out. We're working on that too.

But most of all these ideas require good networking with corporations combined with first class training for those seeking the work.

All ideas are most welcome. Contact John Hibbs -- the old fashioned way works too: (858) 731 0832.
